I Neglected To Mention...

December 09, 2001

I appear not to have mentioned it before, so I'll mention it now - I've fallen in love with Nectarine, the 24/7 Demoscene internet radio station. They only play tracks from the demoscene (which is the community that created the programs Scream Tracker, Impulse Tracker, Buzz, GoatTracker etc - most of the music tools I use). I've been away from the demoscene for 2-3 years, but after listening to Nectarine I'm suddenly really interested in it again. Heck, I'm even thinking of making my own Demo - but that's another story.

How does this relate to my music? Well, Nectarine is a source of inspiration - if they play a song I really like, I can download the original tracked song file and examine the composer's techniques. One track that has caught my attention is Mechanism Eight by Necros (used in the video game Unreal Tournament). It has an incredibly explosive beat, very bass heavy. I downloaded the original Scream Tracker file, and now I can rip it apart, examine exactly how Necros makes his beats, and mimic it.

So that's how I spent much of yesterday, examining the sounds he uses and replacing them with similar ones I've created myself. It's going to take some time to analyse the song fully, but I've already picked up a couple of tricks that will help my tracks sound better.
